"Catch with Dad" Nights Encourage Fathers to be Involved with their Children
The RIDGE Project to host events at minor league baseball games in Toledo and Columbus.
Many fathers want to be more involved in their children's lives but are at a loss when it comes to creative ways to do so. With Father's Day approaching, The RIDGE Project is once again providing a fun way for dads to connect with their kids. For the second straight year, the agency is partnering with minor league baseball as a medium for this.
Last June, the McClure, Ohio non-profit held an event which allowed fathers on the field after a Toledo Mud Hens game to play catch with their children. This year, the RIDGE Project is holding 2 such nights: with Catch with Dad events scheduled for Tuesday June 17th at Fifth Third Park in Toledo after the Mud Hens game with the Lehigh RailRiders and on Monday June 30th at Huntington Park in Columbus following the Clippers game with the Louisville Bats.
According the RIDGE Project Co-Executive Director Ron Tijerina the goal of Catch with Dad is to "spark a greater desire and commitment among area fathers." This commitment will hopefully become long-term as fathers who attend the games will be encouraged to sign a "Catch Time with Your Kids" contract pledging to seven hours of quality time with their kids each week. "Fathers are an integral part of strong families," said RIDGE Project Co-Executive Director Catherine Tijerina. "Catch with Dad reminds them just how important they are. To a child, quality time with Dad is priceless."
The night is for all fathers, but is especially reaching out to low-income families. Several dozen tickets will be distributed free in the community prior to the game so that fathers and their kids, who might not normally attend a Mud Hens game, can have the same opportunity as other families. T-shirts, sponge squeeze baseballs and other promotional giveaways will be available at the game. A RIDGE Project display table on the concourse will provide educational material about RIDGE Project programs to anyone attending.
The RIDGE Project is a Christian, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 2000 that provides services through partnerships with churches, schools, and state and national agencies to serve the youth and families of Ohio. Additionally, the organization strives to inform individuals, communities, the media and local and national policy makers of the importance of strong families. The organization has been recognized as a federal Department of Health and Human Services "Best Practice" program, and has been identified nationally as a leader in family and youth services.
